Removing a wheel from your bike will make it easier to fit in the back of your car and some bike racks require the front wheel to be removed before you can strap your bike into the rack. The quick-release lever allows you to remove the wheel from your bike when fixing a flat. Remove one side of the tire. And instead of backing the cartridge off, activate the trigger and the tire will air up. But what do you do if you can’t get it back on all the way? Because a well-maintained chain lasts longer, makes shifting easier, and prevents rust and fatigue. If the bicycle has derailleur(s), when removing the rear wheel it is important to first shift to the smallest chainrings at the back and at the front. There's actually a thing as too much lube. This system allows you to remove the wheel without the use of any tools BUT you do have to remove the axle from the hub to take your wheel off of your bike. Once the rear wheel is removed, change the tube or tire, swap in a new wheel, etc. Hold a clean cloth on the chain and run the chain backwards again, wiping off excess lube. If the bike is on a stand, the wheel should drop out without manipulating the bike. If the tire is in the front, loosen the bolts on either side of the tire. Any last bits of advice from Madeline? Starting at the valve stem, work the side of the tire back onto wheel using the heels of your hands to push the bead of the tire back on. If the tire is in the back, you must remove the chain from the gear before moving on to the next step. If you’re a lighter rider, you can go lower. Believe it or not, you can actually blow into the tube to get a bit of air in it. This can be done while riding, or when off the bicycle, by lifting the rear wheel with one hand and shifting gears while spinning the pedals with a hand, or foot. That’s good. This has to be opened in order to remove the wheel. VALVE: Found on a tube, a valve is where you put the air in. Remove the old bearings. If you have disc brakes, guide the rotor in between the brake pads. It’ll start getting tight—use your muscles! Insert the valve first and then work your way around and tuck the tube all the way in. Screw in the axle and close the lever. When removing the front wheel, the first step is to disconnect your brake. Was it a thorn, a piece of glass, a staple, or something else? Basically it's the same quick release as on older bikes, but now when you open the quick release, you have to take the loose release and put it into the slot on the bearing in the centre of the rim where it fits.
