Many foods ripen in Autumn and can be eaten immediately or dried and stored for the winter and beyond: roots, grains, seeds and squashes are good examples that you will appreciate in the months ahead.

The slowdown in energy that autumn entails also extends to cooking times. This is very important for how the body ‘processes’ food: slow-cooked foods like soups, stews, and baked dishes replace the raw and quickly cooked foods of summer.

1. Go Big On Autumn Fruits
Summer may be over – but no need to stop the fruits. Many beautiful fruits are ready for harvest at this time of year including grapes, apples, and pears. Peaches and nectarines are also abundant, as are many of the berry fruits. They can be eaten raw or cooked.

2. Slow-Cook Root Veggies
Roots are wonderful for energy, strength, digestion, and the lungs, containing a wide variety of vitamins and goodness. Potatoes, carrots, turnips, onions, parsnips, beets, and sweet potatoes should be put to good use this autumn.

3. Go A Little Nutty
Great for snacking as well as including in slow-cooked food, fresh nuts and seeds (not processed) provide energy and nutrition, strengthening the body and adding ‘good’ fat content to the diet. This helps to build Yin energy.

4.Time For The Lentils
Wonderful in soups, stews, and dips, it’s time to get the lentils working for you. They are high in fiber, protein and vitamins and help to regulate blood sugar levels, strengthen the body, and rejuvenate the kidneys and adrenal glands.

5. More Mushrooms
Mushrooms are also a great autumn food – especially for the lungs and kidneys. If you’ve got too many, dry them and use them in the months ahead as they add nutrition to winter stews and hotpots.

6. Get Squashed
The many varieties of winter squash available provide balance, stability and warmth for the body. They also taste great with natural sweetness and are high in important vitamins (including B1, B6, and C) as well as potassium and folic acid.

7. Herbs and Spices
Stews, soups, and sauces are also great for adding a wide selection of fresh, pungent herbs and spices. Many of these help the lungs and colon, including ginger. cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. They help to break down phlegm and mucus and improve digestion.
