Focusing - Listening  - Achieving


Here at Cryo Spa, we are starting the Modern Mindfulness Program, which are Mindfulness Meditation classes for Children ages 7 to 13.

“Why Mindfulness for children?” you might ask. Well, we tell our children to calm down, to pay attention, to focus, to concentrate and to achieve. But, we don’t tell them how to do all these things.

Mindfulness Meditation gives us the opportunity to teach our kids

how to actually do it – effectively and successfully.

At the end of each Mindfulness Meditation session, there is a Mindfulness Message that helps children apply what they have learned to their daily lives.

Here is one example of a Mindfulness Message:

"When we are mindful, we express ourselves with confidence."

During these sessions, we take a magnifying glass to look at what confidence is, how it feels to be confident and how it feels when they’re not feeling confident. Perhaps they feel smaller or more contracted within their body. So, the next time they don’t feel confident, they can apply the relaxation techniques they learned in class to start feeling more confident about themselves.

Now you have the basic dietary guidelines for a balanced summer diet for energy, health, and wellness, let’s get a little more specific.

What foods should you be eating to cope with the fire that is Yang? You won’t be surprised that they are Yin-based foods, with an abundance of moisture and water…

1. Plenty of summer veggies

You’ll find that many of the most common summer veggies are naturally high in water content. These include peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, as well as eggplants and squash. Eat them fresh – the fact that they generally don’t last long means that nature intended them to be eaten in the season that produces them.

2. Heavy on the greens

Summer produces some very healthy, heavier-leaved greens such as kale, broccoli, chard and spinach. These can be steamed, made into salads, or stir fried - ideal for summer.

3. Go big on summer fruits - but not too big

Summer is also a great time to replenish the Yin with fruits bursting with water content, vitamins, and antioxidants. This includes the many types of melons, tropical fruits like pineapple, as well as all the wonderful berry fruits that help cleanse the blood. Remember, though, two things about fruits to be wary of: firstly, they are high in sugar; and, secondly, they can be high in residual pesticides. So be sure to choose organic fruit and eat it in moderation.

4. Lower volumes of meat

Animal protein is dense and heats the body. This means that more heat is needed to digest it, so during the summer try to reduce the amount of meat and fats you eat. You will notice a difference in your energy levels.

5. Go whole with grains

Whole grains help sustain the body and should be eaten regularly year-round. Use whole grains like quinoa and millet, which are great to bulk out salads or to put in soups. Make sure it is the right type of grain – whole, preferably organic grains, not the processed type found in baked goods, which lack nutrients.

6. Experiment with root vegetables

While root vegetables like beets, turnips, radishes, sweet potatoes, and carrots may conjure up images of hearty winter stews, they can be just as effective in summer recipes like soups, salads, or even raw in some cases (great with dips). Instead of roasting or stewing them, try steaming, sautéing, or grilling them.

7. Love the legumes

Legumes like lentils, mung beans, chick peas, barley, and peas are the final ingredient for a healthy summer diet. They bring valuable fiber and protein to the body and can be combined effectively with whole grains to deliver a great energy balance through soups, dips, and other dishes.


Summertime means enjoying light and healthy drinks made of nature’s sweet goodness. Serve this delicious, cool and refreshing Watermelon Lime Juice at your next barbecue or pool party on a hot summer day!
